Significance of the Indramat H1 Status Indicator

May 14, 2025

The Indramat motion control system consists of a network of robust, precision engineered components each vital to the system's performance. While motors and drives typically receive the most attention, one small but critical component often overlooked is the H1 status indicator. Despite its size, the H1 display plays a key role in troubleshooting, monitoring, and maintaining the entire drive system.

What Is the H1 Status Indicator?

The H1 status indicator is a built-in two-character alphanumeric display found on the front panel of Indramat drive controllers, such as the DDC, DDS, DKS, and MDD series. Located near the bottom of the front panel, this display provides real-time diagnostic information, helping operators and technicians quickly understand the operational status of the drive and connected components.

The Role of the H1 Status Indicator

Think of the H1 indicator as your system’s first line of communication. It visually alerts users to issues and helps identify potential problems before they escalate into system-wide failures.

The H1 indicator provides information related to:

  • Faults in the drive, motor, encoder, or cable connections

  • Incorrect or incompatible parameters

  • Improper configuration or system usage

  • Internal system states such as command execution, warnings, and error thresholds

When a diagnostic code is triggered, it is displayed in two-character segments. In the case of a four-character code (e.g., F234), the display will alternate between the first and second halves (e.g., F2 → 34).

If multiple diagnostic messages are present, the H1 indicator will cycle through them in order of severity, allowing users to prioritize response actions.

Types of Diagnostic Messages Displayed

The H1 indicator can display a range of diagnostic message types, including:

  • Error messages (Fxxx) – Indicate critical faults requiring immediate attention

  • Warning messages (Exxx) – Signal potential issues that may affect performance

  • Command messages – Indicate accepted or rejected command functions

  • Status messages – Reflect current system states or modes of operation

  • Operation messages – Provide feedback on tasks like boot-up or configuration

Each message can be referenced in the Indramat user manual, which outlines:

  • The meaning of the diagnostic code

  • All likely causes, listed in order of probability

  • Step-by-step corrective actions

FAQs

Where Is the H1 Status Indicator Located?

The H1 display is located on the lower portion of the drive controller’s front panel. It’s easy to identify and designed to be visible even when the controller is mounted inside an enclosure.

Can H1 Diagnostic Codes Be Cleared In-House?

Yes, some codes especially non-fatal ones can be cleared internally. For example, you might press the S1 reset button or reload default parameters using commands like C700. However, more serious errors (e.g., those indicating motor or drive failure) typically require professional diagnosis and service.

What Should I Do If I Encounter an Unknown Code?

First, consult your drive controller's manual. If you've misplaced your manual or are unsure how to proceed, Wake Industrial can provide you with the right documentation or help diagnose and resolve the issue.
