GE Fanuc offers a comprehensive family of intelligent and configurable Genius I/O Input/Output blocks designed to simplify equipment design, enhance system flexibility, and improve production efficiency. These I/O blocks connect field devices to a Genius communications bus and support both discrete and analog inputs/outputs.

Types of Genius I/O Blocks

Type Description
115V AC 8 Circuit Grouped I/O 8 discrete circuits; configurable for input, output, or both at 115V AC.
115V AC/125V DC Isolated I/O 4 isolated groups, each with 2 circuits; supports 115V AC or 125V DC.
115V AC 16 Circuit Input 16 resistive input circuits in two groups; for limit switches, pushbuttons, etc.
Relay Output Blocks 16 relay outputs in 4 isolated groups; used for lamps, relays, contactors.
16 Circuit DC I/O Available in 24V/48V DC source/sink options; configurable circuits.
32 Circuit DC I/O 12/24V DC source or 5/12/24V DC sink; all 32 circuits configurable.
Analog I/O 115V AC and 24/48V DC options; 4 inputs, 2 outputs with A/D and D/A converters.
Current-Source Analog I/O 4 inputs, 2 outputs; compatible with 4–20 mA devices.
Current-Source Analog Output 6 outputs; 4–20 mA signal compatibility.
Current-Source Analog Input Connects 4–20 mA analog input devices.
RTD Input Blocks Monitors temperature via RTD; 3 isolated groups per block.
Thermocouple Input Blocks Monitors standard thermocouples; 3 isolated input groups.

Configurable Features

Genius I/O blocks offer advanced configurability such as:

  • Circuit-level fault reporting

  • Selectable input filtering (10–100 ms)

  • Output hold last/default state

  • CPU redundancy

  • Output pulse testing

  • Bus Switching Module control

These features vary by block type and are tailored to enhance control, diagnostics, and response efficiency.

Circuit Protection

These blocks use electronic fusing, allowing:

  • Rapid shutdown (as fast as 5 µs)

  • Overcurrent protection

  • Reset via controller or handheld monitor

Type Circuit Protection
115V AC 8 Circuit Grouped I/O Trips at >30A at start, >20A after 2 cycles
115V AC/125V DC Isolated I/O Trips at >25A (AC), >15A (DC) within microseconds
16 Circuit DC I/O Trips at >10A instantly on startup
32 Circuit DC I/O Trips at >5A within 5 ms

Diagnostic Features

Genius I/O blocks support granular diagnostics, including:

  • Open/short circuit detection

  • Overtemperature and overload diagnostics

  • Pulse-testing control

  • EEPROM failure alerts

Each block includes diagnostics tailored to its function, ensuring fault isolation and proactive maintenance.

Field Wiring Specifications

All Genius I/O blocks use standard screw and clamp terminals. Supported wire sizes range from AWG #22 to AWG #12, depending on block type. Some blocks allow multiple wires per terminal.

Power Requirements

Type Power Source
Grouped I/O & Input Blocks Powered via connected device voltage
Relay Output Blocks Requires 115V or 230V AC; 5–250V AC/DC for outputs
DC I/O Blocks 12/24V DC; TTL 5V for sink blocks
Analog/Current-Source Blocks 115V AC/125V DC or 24/48V DC depending on model

Assembly Design

Each block includes:

  • Terminal Assembly: Field wiring

  • Electronics Assembly: Active circuits, communication logic

Configuration data is stored in the terminal base, allowing easy electronics swap without reconfiguration.

Environmental Specifications

  • Operating Temperature: Up to 60°C

  • Vibration: MIL-STD-810C & IEC 68-2-6 compliant

  • Noise Immunity: Suitable for industrial environments

Conclusion Genius I/O blocks by GE Fanuc Emerson are designed for performance, flexibility, and system reliability. Their diagnostic capabilities, robust protections, and configurability make them ideal for demanding industrial applications.
