What is the S1 Button in Indramat Drives?

May 09, 2025

Understanding the Role of the S1 Button

Although Indramat no longer manufactures products, its legacy motion control systems, especially drive controllers, remain widely used across industries due to their unmatched reliability and performance. Among the many components found in Indramat drives, one small yet critical feature is the S1 button.

The S1 button is an essential tool that helps users configure, reset, and maintain system stability. Whether you are clearing an error code, updating settings, or replacing a system component, the S1 button plays a crucial role in supporting the drive’s proper operation.

Key Functions of the S1 Button

In practical terms, the S1 button acts similarly to a reset or revert function—much like pressing Ctrl+Z on a computer. It helps restore or reset system operations to stable parameters.

Here are the three main functions of the S1 button:

Situation Function of the S1 Button
Resetting an Error Code After diagnosing an issue, pressing the S1 button helps clear the error code and restart normal operations.
Activating Manual/Setting Mode If a bad baud rate (communication error) is detected, holding the S1 button for about 5 seconds will shift the drive into Setting mode.
Reinitializing Parameters Pressing the S1 button during system initialization activates the basic loader, resets all parameters associated with the firmware, and prepares the drive for firmware updates or complete resets.

Example of S1 Button in Action

Suppose you have replaced an Indramat servomotor. When the system detects the new motor, it often displays a PL (Parameter Load) or UL (Upload) message.
By pressing the S1 button, the system:

  • Initiates the Initial Program Load (IPL) process.

  • Clears incompatible parameters.

  • Resets the system to the original, correct parameters for stable performance.

This ensures that new hardware operates correctly without conflicts from outdated system settings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where is the S1 Button Located on the ECODRIVE Controller?

The S1 button is clearly visible on most ECODRIVE drive controllers.
You can find it:

  • On the rear panel of the drive controller.

  • Positioned towards the bottom right side.

It is often labeled for easy identification.

Can All Errors Be Cleared Using the S1 Button?

No.
While the S1 button can clear minor errors and perform basic resets, not all errors can be resolved this way.
For complex faults involving hardware issues, communication failures, or deeper system malfunctions, it is recommended to consult qualified service professionals.
